💡 Andon System
An Andon system is a visual signaling system used in lean manufacturing to notify operators and managers of problems in real time so that corrective measures can be taken immediately.
The Andon system originated from the Toyota Production System, which has the premise that stopping the work in the moment will save the organization from major and costly issues in the future.
When an operator encounters a problem, they can signal the Andon system. The visual signaling device will light up, and the manager will be notified. The manager can then investigate the problem and help to take corrective action.
The only way Andon works is if you truly empower operators to use it. This means giving operators not only the permission, but the obligation to stop the line when issues arise. Employees are normally hesitant to stop the line because of the cost of downtime or for fear of being wrong.
