3 Key Takeaways

  1. To build trust with the people you work with, you need to:
    • Do the right thing,
    • Do the best you can, and
    • Show people you genuinely care.

And once the trust is established, it builds a shared commitment.

Trust and commitment are how teams do best and win the most.

  2. As a leader, you can't give what you don't have.

Your first job is to be intentional about your own personal development.

When you become a better version of yourself, you can help others to grow and become the best versions of themselves.

  3. Nothing sustains unless you have systems and mechanisms.

Willpower, motivation, and good intentions are great, but they don't last for long.

Create systems and mechanisms to ensure people can consistently create a predictable output over time.

1 Key Concept

💡 Andon System

An Andon system is a visual signaling system used in lean manufacturing to notify operators and managers of problems in real time so that corrective measures can be taken immediately.

The Andon system originated from the Toyota Production System, which has the premise that stopping the work in the moment will save the organization from major and costly issues in the future.

When an operator encounters a problem, they can signal the Andon system. The visual signaling device will light up, and the manager will be notified. The manager can then investigate the problem and help to take corrective action.

The only way Andon works is if you truly empower operators to use it. This means giving operators not only the permission, but the obligation to stop the line when issues arise. Employees are normally hesitant to stop the line because of the cost of downtime or for fear of being wrong.

The Andon system provides several benefits:

  • Visibility and transparency in the production process
  • Increased productivity, communication, and efficiency
  • Decreased waste
  • Empowered people
  • Reduced costs and downtime
  • Better quality products
  • Long term improvements to production process
